Blashford Lakes is one of the most important inland sites
for waterbirds in southern England. Thousands of wintering wildfowl, gulls
and other species are complemented by some interesting breeding
species, a diverse range of passage migrants, and occasional surprise
visitors.
240 species have been recorded, including no fewer than 40 species of
wildfowl, 35 waders and 15 gulls (plus at least a further four
subspecies). Rarity highlights over the years have included Long-billed
Dowitcher, Collared Pratincole, Franklin's, Thayer's and Bonaparte's
Gulls, Whiskered and White-winged Black Terns, Lesser Scaup,
Ferruginous Duck, Long-tailed Skua, Black Kite, Red-footed Falcon and
'Greenland' Redpoll.
